Not necessarily, but artist led groups can give us more freedom to interact with agendas etc on our own terms. Something about playing the game, but with a bit more of a level playing field?
Perhaps though there is something about the type of artists that artist-led groups attract... not in terms of art form necessarily more in terms of personality... a prepotensity to activitism for example?
